Charlie received a 2:1 in European Business Studies at Bristol UWE and more importantly forged a life long friendship with Duncan. After University he went on to become an equity derivatives broker in the City of London but the desire to start a company with his friend was never far away. During the covid lockdown they saw an opportunity to share a new hobby and business in the exciting sport of efoiling and LondonFoils was born. With their shared passion for surfing, water sports and the great outdoors it seemed the perfect fit. Lift efoils was the obvious choice to partner with and bring efoiling to the UK market as they are the original and the most premium brand in foiling.

The Story so far…
-
LondonFoils was started by Duncan and Charlie, two long term university mates who’s friendship has spanned over 20 years. We used to run club nights in Bristol and in the South of France during our gap year and have been keen to do something together in business for a while. We were intrigued by Lift Foils on big wave surfing legend Laird Hamilton’s Instagram page, although we are relative newcomers to surfing, water has been a powerful factor in both our lives. A weekly ritual of open water swimming and cold water therapy really opened our eyes to the physical and mental benefits it provides particularly during these challenging times which led us to our research and the business opportunity of creating more awareness for eFoiling in the UK, not to mention an exciting new hobby! We’re based in the South East of England and cover London and its surrounding areas so the opportunity for newcomers to try eFoiling is huge.

On Laird Hamilton’s Instagram feed he posted a video of himself hovering over the ocean on what looked to be a flying surfboard with the quote “Lift eFoils are magic…the best thing is that you don’t need wind, you don’t need a wave, you don’t need any other element other than a nice body of water”. After seeing this we were immediately hooked to find out more and made contact with Lift Foils to begin our journey.

We personally have blue 5’4’s with 200 surf wings and black 4’9’s with 170 high aspect wings. Both are epic pieces of kit however right now we are particularly enjoying the 4’9/170 high aspect combo as the performance and carving sensitivity are mind blowing. The beauty of the Lift eFoil line up is you are always guaranteed unrivalled stability and excitement yet with the customizable wings there’s something for riders with all abilities.

eFoiling gives you a unique feeling and exhilaration that’s hard to put into words – kind of like Aladdin on a magic carpet flying above the waves. Both of us come from stressful business environments however when riding an eFoil, your mind is completely clear from all other distractions providing a stunningly pure level of escapism. The eco-friendly technology with the boards being battery powered was a big draw and is surely going to be the direction for water craft in the future.

Here in the UK you can’t rely on the weather however what interested us was the opportunity to efoil in all conditions and with the right equipment and preparation this is absolutely possible! Invest in a good wet suit and water temperature isn’t a problem, Charlie went for a Quiksilver syncro whilst Duncan opted for the O’Neil Hyper Freak both front zipped 5/4’s which are incredibly flexible and keep us nice and warm even in Jan! We’d also definitely recommend the corresponding hoods, gloves and boots particularly on those colder days.

When out with LondonFoils clients or friends we use Bb Talkin Waterproof comms headsets which are brilliant. With a communications distance of up to a mile and being fully submersible they really add to the shareable aspect of the LondonFoils eFoiling experience.
